There is very little doubt that at least one midfielder, and possibly two, will leave Manchester City this summer. Elliot Anderson has joined City this summer from Nottingham Forest, and the England international is expected to be an important player in Enzo Maresca’s side. If Rodri remains, he will be crucial for City. Mateo Kovacic is also expected to stay at the club for next season. Then there are Nico Gonzalez, Rico Lewis, Phil Foden, Rayan Cherki, Nico O’Reilly and Tijjani Reijnders, all of whom could feature in Manchester City’s midfield. Looking at that group, Tijjani Reijnders appears the most likely to depart Manchester City this summer.

Tijjani Reijnders looks to be the odd one out in Manchester City’s midfield options, particularly if City bring in one or two more midfielders before the window shuts. Nottingham Forest have now been linked with an interest in signing the Netherlands international. It is a move that appears to make sense for both Reijnders and Manchester City.

Simon Jones has reported in the Daily Mail that Tijjani Reijnders has become a genuine transfer target for Nottingham Forest. According to the report, Forest are weighing up a £55 million move for Reijnders. Jones further reports that Manchester City signed Reijnders from AC Milan last summer for £46.5 million. He also adds that Atletico Madrid had shown interest in signing Reijnders, but were deterred by Manchester City’s asking price for the Dutch midfielder.

It is difficult to see Tijjani Reijnders having a regular role in Enzo Maresca’s squad. There is simply too much competition for places in Manchester City’s midfield, especially in the position Reijnders operates in. A move this summer would likely suit Reijnders, who would want to play regularly rather than remain a squad player at City. Simon Jones also reports that Reijnders is open to a summer move if it gives him the chance to feature consistently.

On top of that, if Manchester City could recover their outlay on Tijjani Reijnders, or even make a profit, it would represent smart business. If Forest are prepared to pay £55 million for Reijnders, that would look like a good deal for both clubs. Forest would be landing a midfielder they need, while City would be moving on a player who does not appear to fit naturally into their squad.

Nottingham Forest are reportedly interested in signing Tijjani Reijnders from Manchester City this summer. Reijnders does look like a player City could sell in the coming weeks, so this is a story that appears to have real momentum at this stage of the summer.
