Indian stock markets experienced a sudden decline on Wednesday after posting initial gains. The Sensex rose nearly 450 points at one point , but by midday, it had fallen into the red. According to market experts, a major reason for this volatility is the recently implemented new Closing Auction Session (CAS) system, which has increased uncertainty among traders.
What has changed in the new closing price system?
Closing Auction Session (CAS) has been implemented in India from 3 August 2026 .
Earlier, the closing price of a stock was determined based on the volume-weighted average price (VWAP) of the last 30 minutes of trading before the market closed.
Under the new system, a separate closing auction is held for 20 minutes after regular trading for futures and options (F&O) stocks. During this time, buy and sell orders are collected and the final closing price is determined.
Why are traders worried?
Under the new system, traders don’t receive real-time price information during closing auctions, as they used to. Therefore, the final closing price may differ significantly from what is displayed during regular trading.
This has the greatest impact on futures and options (F&O) trading, as these contracts settle based on the closing price. Even a small change in the closing price can impact investors’ profits or losses.
Difference seen between Sensex and Nifty
After the implementation of the new system, the closing price of Nifty 50 is now influenced by the auction process, whereas the closing of BSE Sensex is decided by a separate order book system.
Due to this, an unusual difference is being seen between the two major indices, which has increased the concern of investors doing hedging and derivative trading.
Why was the new system implemented?
The new closing auction system aims to increase market transparency and ensure fairer closing prices. It also seeks to reduce the potential for artificial last-minute price manipulation and align the Indian market with global standards.
Will instability continue in the future?
Market experts believe that this new system may cause volatility in the initial days. However, as investors, brokers, and institutional participants become accustomed to the system, the market is expected to stabilize.
At present, there is no plan from the regulatory bodies to immediately review this system and it is expected that with time the market will adapt itself to the new system.
