Lucknow: At least 95 complaints have reportedly been submitted against Islamic preacher Maulana Jarjis Ansari across Uttar Pradesh after a video containing controversial remarks about Lord Krishna went viral on social media.
In the video, Ansari is purportedly heard claiming that Lord Krishna was a Muslim and offered namaz five times a day. The remarks were reportedly made during a religious gathering in Jharkhand on June 23.
The video resurfaced this week and triggered protests by several Hindu organisations and religious leaders. An FIR has also been registered in Lucknow following a complaint alleging that the remarks hurt Hindu religious sentiments.
Hindu Mahasabha Demands Action
Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha spokesperson Shishir Chaturvedi demanded strict legal action against the cleric and appealed to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to intervene.
The controversy has also reached Mathura, where Dinesh Falahari, president of the Krishna Janmabhoomi Sangharsh Nyas, reportedly wrote to the Chief Minister demanding action against Ansari.
Reports said complaints have been submitted in several districts, with the total number claimed to have reached 95. However, authorities have not publicly released a district-wise list of all the complaints.
Muslim Clerics Also Condemn Remarks
Several Muslim religious leaders have also criticised Ansari’s comments. Shia cleric Syed Saif Abbas Naqvi described the remarks as unfortunate and condemnable, saying they hurt the religious beliefs of another community. He urged Ansari to withdraw the statement and issue an apology.
All India Shia Personal Law Board general secretary Maulana Yasoob Abbas also called for legal action, arguing that linking a revered Hindu deity with Islamic practices disrespected both religious traditions.
BJP leader Mohsin Raza accused opposition parties of providing platforms to individuals making provocative statements and demanded an investigation into the matter. Ansari had not issued a public response to the complaints or calls for an apology at the time of reporting.
