Ather Energy has officially postponed its entry into the electric motorcycle segment by more than two years, company CEO Tarun Mehta revealed in a recent investor presentation. Rather than rushing into the market, the company is currently focusing on expanding its new ‘EL’ scooter platform.

Motorcycle project postponed for now

The launch of Ather’s electric motorcycle, codenamed ‘Zenith’, is now at least two years away. According to Tarun Mehta, electric motorcycles are not an urgent priority for the company at the moment. The company will work on it only after studying the market developments, customer demand and which segments are getting the most response. This is a strategic decision by the company to learn from the experience of other brands and focus capital on its core scooter business.

‘EL01’ to be launched on August 29, 2026

The first scooter based on the platform, the Ather EL01, is scheduled to be launched on August 29, 2026. The production of this platform has already started, homologation has been completed and high-volume testing is in the final stages. After the launch of the EL01, Ather  plans to launch 1-2 more new products based on the same architecture in the next one year.

What does this mean for customers ?

Customers looking to buy Ather’s electric motorcycles will now have to wait until at least 2028. Ather’s role is to see how consumers respond to the electric motorcycle market. Currently, brands like Ultraviollette, Revolt, and Oben are operating in the market, while established companies like Royal Enfield, Bajaj Auto, and Hero MotoCorp are also working on their electric motorcycles.

Ather’s wait-and-see approach makes it clear that they are confident in the scooter segment for now and will only enter the motorcycle market once they see a clearer picture.
