Naini, Prayagraj. The alleged negligence of the Municipal Corporation in the Naini area appears to be costing lives. Five-foot-deep drains lie open on the roadside in front of HDFC Bank. During rains, the drains become flooded, making the distinction between the road and the drain invisible. This poses a constant risk of accidents for pedestrians and motorists.
In the latest incident, a young man and his bike suddenly fell into an open drain during a downpour. The bike began sinking in the drain within no time, threatening the young man’s life. The accident caused panic among those nearby. Locals immediately began rescue efforts and, after considerable effort, pulled the young man from the drain.
The difference between the drain and the road disappears during the rains.
According to locals, the open drain in front of HDFC Bank is about five feet deep. Even on normal days, this drain is a potential accident hazard, but during rains, the situation becomes extremely dangerous. When the drain fills with water, it becomes difficult to tell where the road ends and where the drain begins.
In such circumstances, drivers unknowingly drive into the drain. Locals say that incidents, both large and small, occur here every day, yet the responsible department has not taken effective steps to cover the open drain or to provide adequate security around it.
A major incident was averted, people saved the young man’s life.
After the bike fell into the drain, those present at the scene showed courage and immediately began efforts to rescue the young man. After considerable effort, the young man was safely pulled out. Locals breathed a sigh of relief after the young man’s survival.
People say that if no one had been nearby at the time of the accident, the situation could have been serious. After falling into the open drain, the young man could have suffered a serious accident if the rainwater had risen.
There are no adequate safety measures in open drains.
Local residents allege that there are neither adequate barricades nor signs around open drains to alert drivers of the danger. The problem worsens at night. Due to a lack of adequate lighting and security, the open drains are invisible. Residents say the Municipal Corporation should take immediate action instead of waiting for a major accident. In addition to covering the open drains with sturdy lids, barricades and warning signs need to be installed nearby.
