Marriage is believed to be the end of a lifetime of loneliness. But in reality, it is not (Married Couples Feel Emotionally Lonely). Many people feel emotionally lonely even in the same house, room, or even bed. A recent study found that about 46.4 percent of married couples in India are victims of loneliness. In other words, just being together does not mean an emotional connection is formed.

Guilt only works when you enjoy spending time alone.

Why is loneliness felt even when you have a partner by your side?
1. One of the biggest problems in relationships is the lack of meaningful conversation. Due to family chores, jobs, children, or financial pressures, many couples no longer talk about their feelings. Even under the same roof, the emotional distance continues to grow.

2. Many people lose their hobbies, friends, personal interests, or individual identity after marriage. This creates depression and a crisis of self-identity.

3. Psychologists use the term ‘enmeshment’ to describe a relationship where the personal boundaries between two people are almost erased. This does not increase the intimacy of the relationship; rather, it can lead to anger, resentment, and emotional exhaustion in the long run.

4. Indian society still does not consider husband and wife as separate individuals. If someone wants to travel alone, have separate hobbies or spend time with friends, they are considered selfish. This pressure is even greater for women. It is still normal for a husband to spend time with his friends, but a wife’s desire to spend time alone is branded as ‘social isolation’.

According to experts, if a person can do what they love, spend time with friends, learn something new, or spend some time alone, they can also positively approach the marriage relationship. In such a relationship, both people maintain their identity as independent individuals, while being there for each other when needed.

How to improve your relationship?
• Talk to each other for at least 20-30 minutes every day, keep away from the desire to watch mobile or television.
• Maintain your hobbies and interests. Make time for reading books, traveling, singing, playing sports. Also, do not look negatively at your partner’s desire to spend time alone.
• Do not keep your worries bottled up. Discuss even small problems openly.
• Celebrate each other’s successes. Be supportive of each other, not competitors.
• Seek counseling if necessary. Seeking help from a mental health professional is not a sign of weakness, but of awareness.
Remember, true love never takes away freedom; rather, both can taste the same freedom.
