World U20 Athletics C’ships: Indian mixed 4x400m relay misses final for first time

Indian athletes failed to win any medal on the opening day of the World U20 Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon, USA on Wednesday.

The mixed 4x400m relay quartet of Piyush Raj, Tahura Khatun, Sayed Sabeer and Thiya Arumugam clocked 3:22.85s to finish fourth in Heat 1, trailing Great Britain, Poland and Czechia.

Overall, the Indian team placed 11th in the qualification round and missed out on a place in the final, as only the top nine teams advanced.

This marked the first time India has failed to qualify for the final of this event since its introduction in 2021. The country had previously secured medals in the first two editions and finished fifth last time.

Meanwhile, three Indian field athletes, Amanat Kamboj in Discus Throw, Ashish Yadav and T. Dharanidharan in javelin throw, qualified for the final.

Amanat (52.58m) and Dharanidharan (68.07m) advanced into the final in the last qualifying spot, finishing 12th, while Ashish Yadav (69.87m) finished 2nd.

In the men’s 800m round 1, Mogali Venkatram (1:52.81s) qualified for the semi-finals, finishing 3rd in heat 5, while Uwin Ananthan (1:52.37s) missed out after finishing 7th in heat 1.
