On the third day of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly’s monsoon session, the atmosphere in the House became emotional when Speaker Satish Mahana, referring to Tuesday’s uproar, expressed his deep hurt.

He said that he would now have to introspect on his efforts to strengthen the Assembly’s dignity and democratic traditions over the past four and a half years. He would even have to consider whether he was worthy of this position.

As the House began its proceedings, Satish Mahana stated that Tuesday’s incident deeply saddened him. He said that for the first time, he felt that either his efforts to run the House were lacking or that Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar’s statement that the flaws lie not in the Constitution, but in the people who run it, was correct.

He said that his public and political journey was now in its final stages. Therefore, he would have to seriously consider whether what he did as Speaker of the Assembly over the past four and a half years was right.

He said, “I will also introspect on whether I am worthy of this position. I will make a decision in this regard soon.” Satish Mahana stated that continuous efforts have been made to build a positive image of the Assembly and public representatives.

In a democracy, the role of the opposition is to criticize the government and raise issues of public interest, not to undermine the dignity of the House. Until now, the opposition has followed the democratic tradition of expressing its views, but Tuesday’s events were extremely unfortunate.

He also said that the behavior of a member whom he considered exemplary hurt him the most. He also expressed displeasure over the leak of photographs from inside the House, calling it contrary to the Assembly’s traditions.

During this period, Leader of the Opposition Mata Prasad Pandey appealed to the Speaker to reconsider the suspension of SP MLA Sachin Yadav. He said that if a discussion had been allowed under a rule, the situation could have been brought back to normal. Meanwhile, SP MLA Sangram Singh Yadav said that the opposition wants to raise issues to farmers and students and has confidence in the Speaker’s impartiality and protection.

The Speaker of the Assembly responded that he was fully prepared to listen to the opposition and was given the opportunity several times, but the entire day was wasted due to the uproar. The smooth conduct of the House is the equal responsibility of both the ruling party and the opposition.

Finance and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Suresh Khanna, while supporting the Speaker, said that he has conducted the House with utmost efficiency so far. The entire House has confidence in the Speaker’s impartial working style and that the remaining proceedings will be conducted in accordance with parliamentary decorum.
