US President Donald Trump appears to be deeply trapped by one of his own decisions. Following a strict ruling from the US Supreme Court, the Trump administration has been forced to refund $100 billion in tariffs to businesses.

This entire matter began when the US Supreme Court struck down several extensive and significant import tariffs imposed by the Trump administration in February this year, declaring them completely unconstitutional. Since then, the US government has been under immense pressure to refund importers.

Importers receive significant relief, government refunds $100 billion

This is a significant relief for companies importing goods into the US. According to media reports, the Trump administration has so far returned approximately $100 billion in tariff refunds to businesses. This is the same amount that US companies and importers previously paid to the government as extra duty.

Following this Supreme Court decision, the US government was responsible for refunding a massive $166 billion. According to recent media reports, by the end of July, the Trump administration had successfully issued approximately $100 billion in refunds, while the legal and administrative process for refunding the remaining funds is still underway.

Supreme Court’s 6-3 majority decision turns the tables

In February of this year, the US Supreme Court, in a historic 6-3 majority decision, struck down a significant portion of the President’s tariffs. Prior to this decision, the Trump administration had already collected approximately $166 billion in import duties from US importers.

In a recent official court filing, the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) stated that it has refunded more than three-quarters of the estimated $128.68 billion in refunds to importers. Brandon Lord, acting director of the CBP’s Trade Policy Program Directorate, told the court that these refunds are being distributed expeditiously based on continuous updates from the US Treasury Department.

Select Indian companies are expected to directly benefit from this multi-billion dollar tariff refund process underway in the US. According to reports, Indian companies with subsidiaries in the US or those that shipped goods to the US under the “Delivered Duty Paid” (DDP) model may be eligible for a refund of these import duties.

Several major Indian companies, including CEAT, Balkrishna Industries, CNH India, and Gokaldas Exports, are emerging as contenders. However, it’s also true that not all of the tariffs imposed by the Trump administration were directly to India. Nevertheless, according to a report by the Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI), approximately $10 to $12 billion of the total potential refunds of $166 billion relates to products exported from India to the US during the time the tariffs were in effect. Experts believe that companies will have to go through the necessary legal and documentation process to receive these refunds, so it may take some time for eligible Indian companies to receive their money.
