Two-Wheeler Emergency Ambulance Rules: The central government is launching a new initiative to further improve emergency medical services in the country. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has proposed creating a new regulatory framework for bike ambulances. This aims to provide quick access to patients in areas where traffic congestion or narrow roads prevent regular ambulances from reaching patients on time, preventing timely treatment.
Why is there a need for a bike ambulance?

In such situations, a bike ambulance will enable them to reach the scene quickly and provide first aid. It will also help in transporting the patient to a safe place if needed.
There were no rules until now
It should be noted that until now, there were no specific rules for bike ambulances in the country. They were not designated as a separate vehicle category in the Central Motor Vehicle Rules. Consequently, there was no uniform system for their construction, registration, fitness testing, and operation. Now, the government is preparing to implement clear rules for them.
What changes will the new rules entail?
According to the government’s proposal, bike ambulances will be included as L2 category vehicles. These vehicles will have special arrangements for safe patient transportation and will be equipped with necessary medical facilities. Additionally, the government will implement new safety regulations for the construction, safe maintenance, and operation of bike ambulances.
When will the new rules come into effect?
According to the government’s proposal, new safety regulations will apply to all bike ambulances manufactured from October 1, 2027. After this, every bike ambulance manufactured will be required to have the prescribed safety features and emergency warning lights as per the standards.
