Business Desk – Old Monk Rum Story: Old Monk, one of India’s most popular rum brands, is once again in the headlines. The reason isn’t its taste or popularity, but rather the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) crackdown.

The food regulator has banned three Old Monk variants: The Legend, Gold Reserve, and XXX Matured Rum. It’s alleged that the aging claims on these products’ labels were inconsistent with current regulations. Following this controversy, people are wondering how the name Old Monk came to be, who makes it, and what makes this famous rum.

What’s the story behind the name Old Monk?

Old Monk is produced by the Mohan Meakin company. Colonel Ved Ratan Mohan is considered the founder of this brand. It is said that Ved Ratan Mohan was deeply influenced by the lifestyle and brewing traditions of the Benedictine monks. To honor these saints, he named his rum Old Monk.

Benedictine monks are followers of the Christian saint Benedict. They are considered instrumental in fostering the rich tradition of wine and other alcoholic beverages in Europe. This legacy inspired the brand’s name.

What is Old Monk made of?

Old Monk is a dark rum made from molasses, the thick, dark liquid left over from the sugar cane process.

To make rum, molasses is first fermented. Then, alcohol is produced through distillation. This spirit is then matured in oak barrels for up to seven years.

This process gives Old Monk its deep brown color, distinctive aroma, and distinct taste. Its flavor is marked by sweet notes of vanilla, caramel, and chocolate, which distinguish it from other rums.

Why did FSSAI ban three variants of Old Monk?

According to the FSSAI, Old Monk XXX Matured Rum was labeled “7 Years’ Blended,” but the rum spirit content was less than 5 percent. The majority of it was neutral spirits with no maturation.

FSSAI states that under current regulations, aging claims on any blended alcoholic drink can be based on the shortest aging period of the spirit used in the blend. The Legend, Gold Reserve, and XXX Matured Rum have been banned for violating this rule.

Which Old Monk variants were banned?

The three Old Monk variants banned by the FSSAI include The Legend, Gold Reserve, and XXX Matured Rum, which were taken action against for labeling and aging claims.

Why is Old Monk so popular?

Old Monk has been one of India’s most popular rum brands for decades. Many affectionately call it “the old monk.” Its distinctive aroma, smooth taste, and vanilla-caramel flavors continue to make it a popular choice among rum lovers. However, the brand is currently in the news due to FSSAI action against three of its variants.
