New Delhi: Amid the ongoing political turmoil in Bangladesh, the path for a new head of state has become clear. Following the sudden resignation of former President Mohammad Shahabuddin, the Election Commission has formally announced the schedule for the election of a new president. Since the historic student movement of 2024 and the departure of then-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Bangladesh’s constitutional system has been undergoing an unprecedented transition. In such a critical period, the selection of a new president is considered a crucial step towards establishing democratic continuity and administrative balance in the country. 

Resignation amid political speculation

Former President Mohammad Shahabuddin abruptly resigned from office on July 24, nearly two years before the end of his five-year term. He cited ill health as the reason for his decision.

Shahabuddin, a veteran of the 1971 Liberation War and a former judge, became president in April 2023. He was the last prominent figure to hold his constitutional post after the previous mass movement.

Preparations for the Election Commission

According to the Election Commission Secretariat, voting will be held in the session hall of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban to elect the new president. The Election Commission has set a timetable for submitting, reviewing, and withdrawing nomination papers. Before making the announcement, election officials discussed the matter with Parliament Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, who serves as acting president under the Constitution. The Commission clarified that the list of eligible voters has been prepared and all necessary administrative formalities are being completed in a timely manner.
