New Delhi: The central government on Thursday issued a clarification, saying that no concessions or commitments have been made regarding the import of ethanol for fuel blending from the US. These reports are baseless and factually incorrect.

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry said in a statement that recent media reports that India is importing large quantities of ethanol from the US for fuel blending and plans to import further are false.

The government has clarified that the country’s fuel blending programme and ethanol procurement will continue to be driven entirely by domestic policy requirements.

The ministry said that in accordance with the domestic policy, the ethanol used for fuel blending under the Ethanol Blending Programme is entirely sourced from domestic producers. No ethanol is imported from the US for fuel blending.

The Commerce and Industry Ministry said that apart from this, there is no mention of any exemption or commitment on import of ethanol from America for fuel blending in the India-US trade discussions.

Therefore, the suggestion of a policy change to allow large-scale imports of fuel ethanol from the United States is misleading. India’s fuel blending program and ethanol procurement are entirely determined by India’s domestic policies.
