New Delhi: The Rajya Sabha witnessed a heated argument on Thursday during the monsoon session of Parliament when ruling party MPs began shouting slogans targeting the Congress party following a statement by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Dr. Anil Bonde. The atmosphere in the House became heated for a while, forcing the presiding officer to intervene.
What did MP Dr. Anil Bonde say?
During the discussion, Dr. Anil Bonde, a Rajya Sabha MP from Maharashtra, referred to the political climate before 2014, saying that at that time, people openly questioned issues like corruption and terrorism. He asked the House, “Where can we find terrorists?” In response, several ruling party MPs chanted in unison, “In the Congress office.”
Dr. Bonde then raised questions like, “Where can we find traitors?”, “Where can we find anti-military people?”, and “Where can we find anti-farmers?” The ruling party MPs repeated the same answers to these questions, leading to a commotion in the House.
Deputy Chairman Harivansh intervened
Meanwhile, amid the continued sloganeering, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh intervened. He asked Dr. Bonde to confine himself to the designated topic of discussion and speak only on that subject. The Deputy Chairman clarified that only comments relevant to the subject would be recorded in the House proceedings.
Congress reacted strongly.
The matter remained unresolved, prompting a sharp response from the Congress party to the BJP MPs’ comments. Congress MP Imran Masood said that if the ruling party’s allegations are true, the government should disclose how many terrorists it has arrested from Congress offices since 2014. He added that if no such cases have been uncovered, such allegations are merely political rhetoric.
Imran Masood also alleged that such comments are intended to divert attention from core issues. He said that Parliament should discuss serious topics, not create a tense atmosphere by hurling accusations at each other. However, the BJP MP’s statement and the subsequent sloganeering created political tension in the Rajya Sabha for some time.
