Zalgiris Sign Shot-Blocker Kaodirichi Akobundu-Ehiogu
Lithuanian basketball powerhouse Zalgiris Kaunas have officially strengthened their frontcourt by signing Kaodirichi Akobundu-Ehiogu, one of Europe’s top defensive centers. The Nigerian big man joins the EuroLeague club on a one-year contract with an option for an additional season (1+1 deal) after activating a EuroLeague exit clause in his agreement with Cedevita Olimpija.
EuroCup’s Top Shot-Blocker
Akobundu-Ehiogu earned a reputation as one of the best rim protectors in Europe last season while playing for BAXI Manresa in Spain.
His 2025–26 campaign included:
- 4.4 points per game
- 2.4 rebounds per game
- 1.6 blocks per game (led the EuroCup)
- Outstanding efficiency around the basket in limited minutes.
Why Zalgiris Signed Him
Zalgiris sporting director Gediminas Navickas said the club wanted to strengthen its frontcourt before the season rather than wait for the mid-season market, when quality players become difficult to acquire.
According to Navickas, Akobundu-Ehiogu offers a different skill set from the team’s other centers, particularly with his athleticism, shot-blocking, and ability to finish above the rim.
NBA Summer League Experience
The 26-year-old also showcased his talent during the 2026 NBA Summer League with the Dallas Mavericks, averaging:
- 6.4 points
- 2.4 rebounds
- 1.2 blocks
His performances further highlighted his defensive instincts and athletic upside.
Career Journey
Before arriving in Kaunas, Akobundu-Ehiogu built an impressive international résumé:
- Memphis Tigers (NCAA)
- Tigers Tübingen (Germany)
- Pallacanestro Varese (Italy)
- BAXI Manresa (Spain)
- Brief offseason move to Cedevita Olimpija
- Now joins Zalgiris Kaunas in the EuroLeague.
What He Brings to Zalgiris
The 2.08-meter (6-foot-10) center is expected to provide:
- Elite rim protection
- Strong pick-and-roll finishing
- Excellent athleticism
- Defensive versatility
- Valuable depth in the frontcourt
His arrival gives Zalgiris another defensive weapon as the club prepares for the upcoming EuroLeague season.
The Bottom Line
By signing Kaodirichi Akobundu-Ehiogu, Zalgiris have added one of Europe’s premier shot-blockers to their roster. The Nigerian center’s defensive presence, athleticism, and experience across several top European leagues make him an important addition as the Lithuanian champions aim to compete at the highest level in the EuroLeague.
