Despite everything, the Golden State Warriors remain focused on one goal: competing for an NBA championship as long as Stephen Curry is still the centerpiece of the franchise. The problem, however, is that many insiders believe the team has not done enough to keep pace with the Western Conference’s elite.
The Warriors made a push to acquire Giannis Antetokounmpo, but came up short. They later explored the possibility of landing Jaylen Brown, while their dream of convincing LeBron James to sign never materialized.
In the end, Golden State opted for continuity, keeping key veterans such as Draymond Green, Al Horford, Kristaps Porziņģis, Gary Payton II and De’Anthony Melton. It’s a competitive group, but many believe it still lacks the difference-making talent needed to seriously contend for another title.
Perkins: “With Curry, the goal has to be an NBA title”
Appearing on ESPN, Perkins argued that a team led by Stephen Curry cannot be satisfied with simply making the playoffs.
The former NBA center also pointed out that time is no longer on the Warriors’ side.
Despite his criticism, the Warriors could still emerge as one of the league’s most active teams over the coming months. Golden State still has promising young players and valuable draft picks that could become the foundation of a trade package if another NBA superstar requests a trade during the season.
The window to build one final championship-caliber team around Stephen Curry has not completely closed – but it is getting smaller. And, at least in Kendrick Perkins’ view, the Warriors’ current roster leaves them one step behind the NBA’s true title favorites.
