The central government is taking a major step to prevent fatal accidents and vehicle collisions on the country’s roads. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has issued a draft notification, according to which it is proposed to make it mandatory for all new two-wheelers, three-wheelers, cars, buses and trucks to be equipped with vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication system from October 1, 2028. Vehicles that already have this system will be required to comply with the relevant standard (AIS-230) by October 1, 2027.
If there is an accident or vehicles are stopped on the other side of the curve, this system will alert the driver before the curve. The most important feature of V2V technology is that it works without any mobile or cellular network. This device installed in the vehicles will give real-time data about its location, speed, direction and braking to other nearby vehicles through small radio signals.

If the vehicle ahead brakes suddenly, changes lanes unsafely, drives in the wrong direction or approaches an ambulance or emergency vehicle, drivers will get immediate alerts through the dashboard or through the sound of a beep.
In the second phase, vehicles will be connected to infrastructure
After V2V, the government will also implement Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) technology. Under this, sensors will be installed on roads, traffic signals, electric poles, bridges and flyovers, which will provide vehicles with live information about road conditions and construction works.
