New Delhi: Heavy rain has been lashing the entire NCR, including the capital, Delhi, since Friday morning. From Safdarjung Hospital to Connaught Place, from Sarai Kale Khan to Chhattarpur Farms, roads are submerged. Vehicles are snaking, and traffic jams stretch for kilometers. The International Monetary Fund (IMD) has issued a red alert and advised caution for the next three days.
Where did waterlogging occur? Traffic came to a standstill.
Due to the rain, Delhi, Gurugram, and Noida are flooded at various places. Long queues of vehicles are seen on the Delhi-Jaipur highway. The Kapashera border and surrounding roads are also so waterlogged that potholes and broken roads are barely visible. According to the IMD, the rain is currently heavy, but its intensity will gradually decrease.
IMD forecast: How will the weather be till August 10
IMD scientist Ankit said that Delhi received moderate rainfall on Thursday. Heavy rain is also expected on Friday. Therefore, a red alert has been issued.
Further situation:
- August 8 and 9: Rainfall in Delhi will be in the light category.
- Till August 10: Light to moderate rain may continue.
- After that: Rain will become very light to light.
Nationally, a yellow alert has been issued for parts of Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in eastern Rajasthan, which is why an orange alert has been issued there. The IMD has stated that a low pressure will develop over eastern India in the next 24 hours. This could lead to heavy to very heavy rainfall in West Bengal and Odisha.
What about schools? Will there be holidays?
There has been no official notification from the Delhi Directorate of Education or the NCR district administrations regarding school closures. Parents are advised to keep checking school and administration websites or notices.
However, due to the Kanwar Yatra in Ghaziabad, schools will remain closed until August 12. Saturday is the second Saturday in Delhi-NCR, so many schools may remain closed tomorrow anyway.
Rain damage: 9 houses collapsed, 16 trees uprooted
According to the Delhi Fire Service, nine incidents of house collapses have been reported since late last night. Sixteen trees have also fallen in various areas. In one incident, three women were trapped inside a house and were rescued safely by firefighters.
The Meteorological Department has appealed to people to avoid leaving their homes unless absolutely necessary. Those living in low-lying areas should remain vigilant. While the rain has brought relief, waterlogging and traffic jams have exacerbated the problems.
