  • Toyota Urban Cruiser Highrider recorded a healthy 23 percent year-on-year growth, capturing 32 percent market share with sales of 18,577 units.

After a long journey of mild hybrid cars in the Indian automobile market, ‘strong hybrid’ vehicles are now getting a big response. Currently, this technology is dominated by three major companies – Toyota, Maruti Suzuki and Honda. Soon, Renault will also enter this segment with a large battery pack through the Duster Hybrid. Looking at the sales figures for the first half of 2026, Toyota has maintained its dominance in this market.

Toyota cars dominate the market

Toyota Innova Hycross is the best-selling car in the strong hybrid segment in the Indian market. In the first 6 months of 2026, a whopping 27,812 units of Innova Hycross were sold, accounting for 48% of the market share. Despite a 6% decline in sales compared to last year, the car remains at the top.

The second-largest model is the Toyota Urban Cruiser Highrider, with 18,577 units sold. The Highrider has captured a 32% market share, registering a strong growth of 23% year-on-year.

  • Maruti Grand Vitara : This car has a 7% market share with sales of 4,086 units (-54% decline).
  • Maruti Victoris : With the new entry, it sold 3,231 units and gained 6% share.
  • Maruti Invicto : 1,418 units sold and 2% market share (-26% decline).
  • Toyota Camry : 1,188 units sold (2% market share).
  • Toyota Vellfire : It has registered a spectacular year-on-year growth of 60%, selling 914 units.
  • Honda City : 659 units sold, registering a growth of 22% and gaining 1% market share.

Conclusion – Overall, Indian consumers are now gravitating towards strong hybrid options over petrol due to better mileage and better performance. The partnership between Toyota and Maruti Suzuki has given this technology immense momentum in the market.
