Health Desk. With aging, the body undergoes many natural changes. After the age of 40, muscle strength and flexibility can gradually decline, while prolonged sitting and irregular eating habits can also take their toll. However, with a little caution and a regular routine, you can stay active and fit for the long term.

Fitness doesn’t necessarily require spending hours in the gym. Incorporating a few simple habits into your daily routine can be very helpful. Let’s explore four things you can incorporate into your daily routine after the age of 40.

1. Give your body enough activity every day

After 40, it’s crucial to avoid prolonged inactivity. Daily activities include brisk walking, cycling, swimming, or any other activity you can manage. If you have to sit all day, getting up and walking for a few minutes every now and then is a good habit. Regular physical activity helps keep your body active and makes everyday tasks easier.

2. Do strength exercises for muscles

Maintaining muscle strength becomes important as we age. To achieve this, you can engage in light strength training a few times a week. Squats, wall push-ups, resistance band exercises, or light weight exercises can be done according to your ability.

3. Include protein and nutritious foods on your plate.

Exercise alone doesn’t keep the body strong. Adequate nutrition is also essential. After 40, daily meals can include lentils, chickpeas, kidney beans, cheese, yogurt, eggs, fish, or other protein sources. Also, consume green vegetables, seasonal fruits, whole grains, nuts, and seeds in moderation. It’s best to limit fried, overly sweet, and ultra-processed foods.

4. Don’t ignore daily sleep and rest

Just as exercise and diet are essential for physical fitness, adequate rest is equally important. Consistently lacking sleep can lead to fatigue and feeling lethargic throughout the day. Try to go to bed and wake up at approximately the same time every day. Limiting mobile phone or other screen time before bed and avoiding heavy meals at night can also be beneficial for sleep quality.
