Two teachers and three other school staff were killed at the secondary school in Nonthaburi province, bordering Bangkok, a statement said.

The suspect, a 14-year-old boy, was also accused of earlier killing two of his grandparents at a home in the province.

The perpetrator also died, the statement said, with a police official telling AFP he had killed himself.

Thailand’s Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said ‘academic stress’ appeared to be a key factor behind Friday’s deadly shooting at Debsirin Nonthaburi School, according to Viory.

“There were many other factors that caused this incident […] The main issue was academic stress,” the prime minister said.

“We also learned that the grandparents – the grandmother was a teacher, and she wanted him to study well, so she was quite strict,” he added.

A close friend of deputy headmaster Kittipong Somrat, who was among those killed, called for tighter security after the attack.

“I want there to be better control than this because we didn’t want this incident to happen. The family is very grieved and on their way here,” he said.

Deputy Prime Minister Yodchanan Wongsawat said authorities were arranging school closures and mental health support for teachers and students following the shooting.

Investigators said the 14-year-old fired 26 rounds from a handgun legally registered to his grandfather. Police are investigating what drove him to carry out the attack and how he gained access to the weapon.
