Despite all his creative qualities, the Dutch forward has not produced enough in front of goal, and Juventus are moving closer to an agreement with INEOS.

Benjamin Sesko is still injured, and although Bryan Mbeumo has the versatility to cover in the Slovenian’s absence, a specialist No.9 will be required with the Red Devils due to compete on four fronts next season.

INEOS have looked at Dusan Vlahovic and Pio Esposito, but both transfers seem difficult to pull off. The co-owners are also understood to favour players who are already proven in the Premier League.

Ollie Watkins is one of the names linked with the 20-time English league champions, but Aston Villa are expected to demand a hefty fee, which could discourage United.

Another striker to have attracted interest from the Old Trafford club is Brentford’s Igor Thiago after his outstanding campaign last season.

Unsurprisingly, several clubs around Europe have taken notice, but Brentford have now made their stance clear regarding interest in their key forward.

According to TEAMtalk, the West London club will not consider any bids for the Brazilian, with the 25-year-old himself also eager to remain at the Gtech Community Stadium.

“Brentford have no intention of entertaining offers for star striker Igor Thiago this summer, regardless of which clubs come calling, TEAMtalk can exclusively reveal.

“Manchester United, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur have all registered interest through intermediaries as they assess options to strengthen their attacking departments.

“Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich have been closely monitoring Thiago’s progress and continue to keep detailed reports on the striker’s development.

“Just as importantly for Brentford, there is no pressure coming from the player’s camp. We understand Thiago has no interest in pursuing a move at this stage of his career and remains fully committed to the project in West London.”

Igor Thiago secured a place in Brazil’s World Cup squad thanks to his performances last season, but he found it difficult to reproduce that same level when representing his country.

That should act as a warning for United. There are better options available in the market, and at around half the price Brentford are likely to demand for their No.9.
