Pooran Blitz Fires MI London to Seven-Wicket Win Over Sunrisers at the Kia Oval
Nicholas Pooran produced one of the most devastating innings of the Hundred season so far as MI London chased down a target of 144 with 16 balls to spare, defeating Sunrisers by seven wickets at the Kia Oval in front of an announced crowd of 20,540.
Pooran finished unbeaten on 58 from just 22 deliveries, arriving at the crease with MI London in trouble at 51 for 3 after 44 balls and promptly dismantling a Sunrisers bowling attack that had done so much to build a competitive position. He was named Meerkat Match Hero for an innings that included an array of sixes and fours and contained the fastest fifty in MI London's franchise history — reached from just 19 balls.
A Difficult Start for MI London
Sunrisers gave themselves every chance of defending 144 when Brydon Carse tore through MI London's top order in a quite magnificent opening spell. Carse bowled unchanged through the first ten balls of MI London's chase, taking two wickets in his opening set. Will Jacks departed for 2, caught by Benny Howell at cover after being beaten by a delivery that angled in before seaming away. Jason Roy, playing on his 36th birthday, followed immediately for a duck, edging to Mitchell Marsh at slip as Carse produced another delivery of real pace and movement. MI London were 8 for 2 inside the first ten balls, needing 136 from 90.
Carse continued to apply pressure as he bowled into the powerplay. He eventually finished his allocation with figures of 2 for 18 from 20 balls — by some distance the most economical and dangerous performance with the ball on the night.
Vince and Curran Weather the Storm
James Vince and captain Sam Curran steadied the innings through a cautious but necessary rebuilding phase. The pair found scoring difficult against a disciplined Sunrisers attack, with Matthew Potts and Nathan Ellis both keeping things tight. Vince accumulated slowly, reaching 17 from 18 balls before Ellis bowled him, the ball nipping back sharply to take out off stump. His departure left MI London at 51 for 3 after 44 deliveries, and the equation had become considerably more demanding.
Curran, however, had provided a platform. He brought up his fifty from 34 deliveries — a knock that Pooran himself singled out afterwards, noting that Vince and Curran had done important work before his arrival — and he remained at the crease throughout the remainder of the chase, finishing 60 not out from 39 balls.
Pooran Takes the Game Away
From the moment Pooran reached the middle, the match changed entirely. He required just three balls to score his first boundary and began dismantling Benny Howell's slower-ball variations from the off, hitting four, six and four in quick succession. Dan Lawrence's off-spin offered no respite. Abrar Ahmed, who had been economical, was struck for six, six in successive deliveries as Pooran swept high over square leg and then slapped over long on.
When the floodlights came fully on at the Kia Oval, Pooran noted afterwards, the ball began sliding on more readily and the scoring accelerated. Ellis returned with the new ball but could not stem the flow. Potts, brought back to apply pressure, was launched over deep midwicket for six from a length ball first delivery of his second spell. The fifty partnership between Pooran and Curran arrived from just 23 deliveries.
Pooran's fifty came from 19 balls, the fastest in the franchise's history across its time as Oval Invincibles and MI London. He reached it with a driven single off Ellis, and by that point the required rate had long ceased to be a concern. The winning runs arrived in the final over bowled by Potts — Pooran driving through mid off for four to seal a seven-wicket victory with 16 balls unused.
Sunrisers Left Without Answers
For Sunrisers, the match illustrated the fine margins in this format. Carse and Ellis had put MI London under genuine pressure with the ball, and a score of 143 represented a competitive total. But once Pooran arrived at the crease, the Sunrisers bowlers — particularly the slower-ball options in Howell and Abrar — found themselves without an effective counter. Zak Crawley, captaining Sunrisers, brought Potts back in an attempt to arrest the momentum, but the result had already tilted firmly in MI London's favour by that point.
Sam Curran, speaking after the match, acknowledged the difficulty of the early period but said both he and Pooran had remained as positive as possible and backed themselves once the conditions eased. Pooran added that reaching a fifty in front of his family, who were in attendance at the Kia Oval, made the innings particularly meaningful.
MI London move on from their opening fixture with a convincing win. Sunrisers, despite Carse's excellent early bowling, were ultimately unable to cope with the power Pooran brought to the chase in its critical phase.
