Google announced new updates for 'Ask Maps' on Thursday. These features enhance the capabilities of the Gemini-powered natural language query tool, which was first introduced in Maps in March. Described as the biggest change to Google Maps in over a decade, 'Ask Maps' can now provide responses in Hindi, offer real-time public transport information, and utilize 'personal intelligence' to deliver more personalized suggestions. Google claims the tool also remembers past conversations, allowing users to continue planning trips without having to start over from scratch.

In a blog post, Google announced that its conversational AI feature in Maps now supports Hindi. Alongside English, users can now ask questions, search for destinations, and get recommendations in Hindi using natural language.

The Mountain View-based tech giant is also introducing 'personal intelligence' to Ask Maps. Much like in Photos, Drive, and other Google apps, users can now connect their Gmail accounts to Maps. This enables the app to provide contextual recommendations based on information such as hotel bookings, flight details, and restaurant reservations.

As an example, Google noted that Ask Maps could suggest nearby attractions before a scheduled flight or recommend places to visit near a booked hotel. Gmail integration remains disabled by default and must be turned on manually.

Another key feature is 'conversational memory.' If history settings are enabled, Ask Maps can remember previous chats. According to the company, this makes it easier for users to resume trip planning or revisit earlier suggestions. Instead of re-entering prompts, users can ask the AI ​​to recall previously suggested activities or destinations.

Additionally, live public transit information has been added to 'Ask Maps' in India. With this update, users will be able to view real-time schedules, delays, route changes, and connecting options for buses, metro services, and trains directly within the conversational interface. This move aims to help commuters make better decisions by providing the latest transit details without the need for repeated searches.

Google states that the new live transit experience, along with personal intelligence and conversation memory, is now rolling out in all regions where 'Ask Maps' is available, including India. However, additional agentic capabilities—such as food ordering, hotel discovery, and event recommendations—are currently limited to the US.
