Leader of Opposition in Tamil Nadu Udhayanidhi Stalin was taken into custody by the police from his Chennai home today in the context of obscene remarks reportedly made during a public meeting in Thanjavur, thus escalating the political battle between the DMK party and the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).
The policeman took Udhayanidhi into custody on the basis of the complaint lodged by one of the officials of the TVK who said that there were obscene remarks in his speech which have been taken as being directed at actress Trisha Krishnan.
Udhayanidhi Describes Custody As ‘Vindictive’
Reacting to his arrest, Udhayanidhi stated that this step by the police was ‘vindictive’ and that he did not intend to attack anyone. He went ahead to claim that all he mentioned in his speech was the Chief Minister and that he will not say anything more about the matter. The DMK official has gone to court seeking anticipatory bail.
Tensions Before Custodial Action By Police
His arrest came at a time when police officials were in talks with DMK officials outside the premises of Udhayanidhi. There is footage showing that there was a confrontation between Udhayanidhi’s wife and some police officials accusing them of delaying.
Political Reactions Escalate
The scandal has led to strong reactions on both sides of the aisle. BJP members have strongly condemned the statements and called for legal measures to be taken immediately. Manickam Tagore, the head of the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee, has also criticized the statements, requesting Udhayanidhi to retract his statements and offer an unreserved apology.
The government party, TVK, has organized state-wide protests against the leader from the opposition DMK, stating that he had degraded political debate. Members of TVK have claimed that the statements were a result of poor political environment and requested stern action to be taken.
On the other hand, senior member of the DMK, TR Baalu, has come forward in support of Udhayanidhi, stating that his speech did not mention anyone by their name.
