Islamabad. The United Nations (UN) has reprimanded the Pakistani government for the violent crackdown against peaceful protesters in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The UN has stated that those responsible for the harm and deaths of civilians during the protests must be held accountable. Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, clarified in an official statement that all governments anywhere in the world must allow peaceful protests. He said, “If civilians are harmed or killed as a result of participating in peaceful protests, an impartial investigation should be conducted and strict action should be taken.”
Human rights chief expresses serious concern
Secretary-General Guterres fully supports the efforts of UNHCHR (UNHCHR) Volker Turk, who expressed deep concern over the unrest and deaths in PoK. The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights has demanded an impartial and independent investigation into the anti-terrorism restrictions imposed by the Pakistani government on the Joint Awami Action Committee, a prominent civilian organization, and the arrest of its leaders.
Objection to Internet Blackout and Restrictions
The United Nations has expressed serious objection to the restrictions on public gatherings and the complete shutdown of internet services in the region. Furthermore, the UN, considering this a direct violation of freedom of expression and fundamental rights, has called on Pakistan to immediately provide full internet access and halt repressive measures.
What is the cause of this tension in PoK?
It should be noted that the public and local organizations have been staging widespread protests in PoK for some time now against local election processes and the decision to reserve seats for outsiders. Violent clashes between protesters and security forces have so far resulted in numerous deaths and hundreds of injuries. In view of the deteriorating situation and heavy tension in the area, the elections for the upcoming phases have also had to be postponed.
