Ai Ogura Downplays Silverstone Podium Hopes Despite Strong Friday Performance
Trackhouse Aprilia's Ai Ogura delivered a solid start to the 2026 British Grand Prix at Silverstone but remains cautious about his chances of securing a podium this weekend.
After an "acceptable" opening day, Ogura tempered expectations despite showcasing promising pace and consistency that have defined his recent form.
Having emerged as the highest-scoring rider over the last three rounds-with two second-place finishes and a victory-Ogura has climbed to second in the riders' standings. His recent surge positioned him as a consistent contender for top-three finishes, and his Friday practice performance, where he became the first rider to break into the 1m56s bracket, seemed to reinforce his competitiveness at Silverstone. Nevertheless, Ogura kept his ambitions in check.
"I'm not expecting to finish in the top-three on Sunday," Ogura stated after the first practice sessions. "But this year's condition is a lot nicer than last year, so it's definitely helping me a lot. Hopefully, we'll have a good condition in the next two days." His cautious outlook contrasts with the pace he demonstrated, highlighting the challenges Silverstone presents despite an Aprilia bike showing strong potential.
Last year's crash at Silverstone, which caused Ogura to miss most of the race weekend, has left him with less track time at the circuit than some rivals. While leader Jorge Martin emphasized this as a hurdle, Ogura took a more measured view. "It was quite okay, at least I did FP1 last year," he commented, downplaying the disadvantage.
Reflecting on Friday's performance, Ogura described the day as "acceptable," noting: "The lap time was okay and I didn't expect that I ended up day one in P5, so it's good." When asked what would have been unacceptable, he was clear: "Lap time which is not enough to be in the top-10, because our target is to be in the top-10 today."
Ogura enters the weekend trailing championship leader Jorge Martin by 14 points. Meanwhile, Marc Marquez, who placed sixth on Friday and admitted feeling "far from the podium," sits four points behind Ogura, underscoring the tight battle at the front of the standings.
With Friday's solid pace yet tempered expectations from Ogura, Silverstone promises to be a critical test for the rising Aprilia star's championship ambitions.
