The Central Government on Saturday announced the appointment of 30 new judges to the country’s four major High Courts. According to the Law Ministry, these appointments include 20 advocates and 10 judicial officers. It is believed that these new appointments will expedite the disposal of pending cases and strengthen the High Court’s judicial system.
Madras High Court receives the highest number of appointments
The Madras High Court has received the highest number of new appointments, with 15 judges. This is followed by the Calcutta High Court with 8, the Karnataka High Court with 6, and the Madhya Pradesh High Court with 1.
These appointments are expected to speed up judicial work in the respective High Courts and help resolve pending cases. Given the long-standing backlog of cases in the courts, increasing the number of judges is considered crucial for judicial functioning.
20 Advocates and 10 Judicial Officers
Of the 30 appointed judges, 20 are advocates, while 10 judicial officers have also been appointed as High Court judges. In the Indian judicial system, qualified candidates are selected from both advocates and judicial officers for appointment as High Court judges.
Starting as Additional Judges
Additional judges appointed to the High Court typically serve for approximately two years. After this, they may be appointed as permanent judges based on their performance and other requirements.
These appointments by the Central Government are being considered a significant step towards enhancing judicial capacity in the High Courts. This is expected to accelerate the process of hearing cases in the courts and disposing of pending cases.
