Real Madrid have enjoyed a blockbuster summer transfer window, strengthening their defence with the arrivals of Denzel Dumfries, Marc Cucurella and Ibrahima Konate.

On top of that, Los Blancos have also boosted their attack with Carlos Espi and Bernardo Silva, but the headline signing is unquestionably Yan Diomande.

Just a year after leaving Leganes for RB Leipzig, Diomande is back in the Spanish capital, with Real Madrid reportedly paying an initial €125 million plus a further €15 million in bonuses. But is the 19-year-old winger really worth that outlay? His former coach Todd Eason certainly believes he is.

“I see everyone in the media saying, ‘Is he worth $100 million?’ I think he is.

“Even though he does not have as much experience, he is going to be a guy who will keep increasing his value as he continues to mature and gain that experience,” Eason said in an exclusive FourFourTwo interview.

Born into poverty in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, Diomande always believed a professional football career would be the route through which he could support his family.

That is why he left home at the age of nine, playing on the dirt pitches of the Academie Inter Foot Sud Comoe. At 15, Diomande flew alone to Florida and joined DME Academy, recognising that the professional pathway would most likely be closed to him if he remained in Africa.

Despite dealing with homesickness and being one of the few players in Eason’s team who did not speak English, Diomande adapted smoothly to life in American football.

He won the amateur United Premier Soccer League national title and the UPSL Playoffs Golden Boot, scoring in all six rounds of the play-offs, before going on to claim 2023 STARI Player of the Year honours.

Unable to secure a new club, Diomande had to return to Ivory Coast before eventually drawing interest from Leganes, who signed him in November 2024. He made his professional debut four months later, played 10 matches and did enough to persuade Leipzig to activate his €20 million release clause.

It turned out to be a shrewd investment, as Diomande helped Leipzig finish in the top three of the Bundesliga and qualify for the Champions League, contributing 13 goals and 10 assists in 36 appearances.

The Bundesliga Rookie of the Season then returned to North America for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, producing a Man of the Match performance against Ecuador and registering an assist in a must-win victory over Curacao.

Although he could not take his country past Norway in their first-ever World Cup knockout match, Diomande showed his class on the biggest stage in sport. It is hardly surprising, then, that Real have spent heavily on the 19-year-old.

With Rodrygo sidelined by an ACL injury, Diomande has the potential to nail down a starting spot on the right side of the attack alongside Jude Bellingham, Vinicius Junior and Kylian Mbappe.

Unlike other possible options on the right flank such as Arda Guler, Brahim Diaz and Federico Valverde, Diomande is a natural winger blessed with pace and flair, capable of beating his man by cutting inside as well as driving towards the touchline.

“Obviously, you saw him in LaLiga, and once he got going, he was suddenly a standout, and then in the Bundesliga, everybody knew his name,” Eason told FourFourTwo. “It is scary to think what his ceiling is going to be. That is the hard thing, and now he is going to be on a team that he is not going to have to carry.

“I am excited to see what comes of it because I was never able to challenge him enough here, and it did not look like Leganes could challenge him enough either.

“I think we are going to see parts of his game that we probably have not seen, because he is just going to be one of the guys now, instead of being the focal point of the team he is on.”

Two years after playing under Eason, Diomande is now developing under Jose Mourinho, who has returned to the Santiago Bernabeu after 13 years. He will hope to follow the path of fellow Ivory Coast stars Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou, both of whom made significant progress under Mourinho during their time at Chelsea.

He may have been born in Ivory Coast. He may have made his debut in Spain. He may have burst on to the scene in Germany. But without that chapter in the United States, Yan Diomande might never have unlocked his potential and emerged as one of the most promising wingers in world football.
