It is absolutely crazy to me that a cruise ship can operate a massive water park – but Legend of the Seas has much more than that.

The Royal Caribbean ship is currently the world’s biggest, and wow. If you’re booked on the Icon-class ship, you’re in for a treat. I went on my first ever cruise back in the summer of 2023 with Royal Caribbean and fell in love with cruising. Now I’d consider myself a cruise addict.

So how could I resist putting its vast water park through its places?

Category 6 is the largest water park at sea and offers a “larger-than-life adventure” that you can only get on a Royal Caribbean Icon-class ship. It has six record-breaking slides and I’m not proud to admit, but one that I was too scared to go on. While I was brave enough to try Crown’s Edge, I just couldn’t bring myself to stand on the Frightening Bolt.

Royal Caribbean says “once your stomach lurches, it’s too late”, but thankfully for me, my stomach dropped just after seeing the slide. However, my partner did take on the drop waterslide – which is the tallest at sea – and came off it looking like he’d just had the ride of his life.

He stepped into the purple capsule and said the floor had just given way beneath him. He said the ‘jetpack’ strapped to his back helped him shoot down the vertical drop. Although he enjoyed it, I couldn’t help but see he didn’t go back for more.

Also at the top of the tower, where Frightening Bolt is positioned, are the Storm Chasers. This is where you can let your competitive side out. I have to admit, initially, I almost backed out of this one, too, but given the queue of people behind me, I just had to go for it.

You grab a mat, pick your lane and then race down the slide against your opponent and see who can make it to the bottom first. Spoiler, I lost every time – but it was so much fun.

Sadly, Pressure Drop and Storm Surge were closed when we were in the waterpark. Pressure Drop is the first open freefall waterslide at sea and looked like crazy fun. It is an open slide that quickly drops you to the bottom and is one of the smaller water slides in Category 6.

Storm Surge is probably one of the most impressive slides to look at, with a huge ‘wall’ which you slide up, adding adrenaline as it feels as if you are going to fly off – but don’t worry, you won’t, thanks to gravity. Then there’s Hurricane Hunter, which I did multiple times as it was such a fun experience. You can either go down in a raft on your own or with a friend or family member.

There are twists, turns and lots of colourful lighting to enjoy as you’re going through the fast-paced slide.

I’d highly recommend this for those who are a bit nervous about fast and scary waterslides. It’s a good introduction to the Category 6 park and will help you build your confidence to get on some of the bigger rides.

There’s also the Flowrider Surf Simulator tucked at the back of Category 6. The 12-metre-long FlowRider gives you a chance to carve like a pro while friends cheer you on from the stadium seating.

This looked like great fun, but there was always a long line of people waiting to try it out. I watched multiple people quickly shoot off the board and to the back of the Flowrider, but staff were quick to help them back onto the board and give helpful instructions to try and ensure they stayed on the board.

And then, of course, there were the absolute professionals who were able to stand up on the board immediately and make it look like it was the easiest challenge in the world. If you’re on Legend of the Seas, Category 6 is an awesome way to spend a sea day.
