Business Desk – America has now become India’s largest LPG supplier. Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said at a CII event on Friday that after the Hormuz crisis, about 67% of India’s cooking gas (LPG) supply is coming from America. Following the Middle East crisis and the disruption of supplies in the Strait of Hormuz, India has rapidly changed its Energy Security Policy.

According to a report by Equirus Securities, the US has now overtaken Qatar to become India’s largest LNG supplier. Between May and July 2026, India’s LNG imports from Qatar declined by 91%, while supplies from the US increased by 253%. During this period, India imported a total of 7.08 million tonnes of LNG, which is 15% more than the same period last year.

LNG supply from the US is 2.19 million tonnes, Qatar is behind

During May-July 2026, the United States supplied 2.19 million tons of LNG to India, becoming the largest supplier. Nigeria came in second with 1.31 million tons. Qatar’s supply fell to just 0.23 million tons, a 91% year-on-year decline.

During this period, Oman recorded the fastest growth in LNG supplies, at 341%. India’s LNG imports are now increasingly shifting from relying on Qatar to suppliers in the US, Africa, and the non-Qatari Middle East.

India’s gas demand reaches 197 mmscmd

According to the report, India’s total natural gas demand in June was 197 million metric standard cubic meters per day (MMSCMD). This is 7% higher than the previous month and 2% higher than last year.

Gas demand excluding the power sector stood at 176 mmscmd. LNG consumption increased 13% from May and 10% from last year to 110 mmscmd. Domestic gas consumption remained stable at 87 mmscmd, and India’s gas import dependence remained at 56%.

CGD Sector is the largest gas consumer

Sectorally, City Gas Distribution (CGD) was the largest gas consumer with 58 mmscmd of demand. The fertilizer sector consumed 55 mmscmd, and other industries consumed 41 mmscmd.

The power sector’s demand increased to 21 mmscmd. The refinery sector consumed 15 mmscmd, and the petrochemical sector consumed 7 mmscmd. However, the petrochemical sector’s demand is still 48% lower than last year.

Global LNG Price crosses $20

India’s LNG imports remain strong despite high global prices. LNG arrivals were 2.4 million tonnes in May and 2.3 million tonnes in June. Total arrivals in the first quarter of FY27 were 6.2 million tonnes. Provisional data for July showed arrivals of 2.1 million tonnes.

Asian spot LNG prices remain above $20 per MMBtu. Imports from China are above seasonal averages, while European gas storage is at 58%, below historical averages.

There was no fuel shortage even during the Hormuz Crisis.

Hardeep Singh Puri said that despite the Middle East crisis and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, the country was not allowed to face any shortages of LPG and crude oil. Before the war, India imported 50% of its crude oil, 90% of its LPG, and 60% of its other gases through this route.

He said that not a single pump has run dry among the country’s more than 107,000 fuel outlets. In 2014, there were approximately 52,000 fuel outlets in the country.

Crude oil import sources increased from 27 to 41 countries

India has expanded its crude oil supply sources from 27 to 41 countries. The scope of city gas distribution has been expanded from 55 geographical areas to 309. India also has approximately 60 days of crude oil coverage.

84,000 crore rupees plan in Sea Manthan Program

The government has approved the Sea Manthan Program to promote oil and natural gas exploration in the deep sea. This includes a plan worth ₹84,000 crore. Puri stated that deep sea drilling will be carried out by private players, not the government. To increase investment in offshore exploration, the government will provide financial assistance of up to ₹650 crore per well, or 50% of the drilling cost.
