Lifestyle Desk – With the arrival of the monsoon season, we hear many different dietary advice and beliefs. One of the most frequently asked questions is whether or not to eat yogurt during the rainy season. Many believe that yogurt has a cooling effect, so consuming it can cause cold, cough, or throat infection. Some people eliminate it from their diet completely. But is it really necessary to do so? Health experts say that the answer depends on the individual’s health condition, the method and time of eating yogurt.
Yogurt is a probiotic food that contains beneficial bacteria. These bacteria help maintain intestinal health and strengthen the digestive system. Yogurt also contains calcium, protein, phosphorus, vitamin B12, and many other nutrients that are considered beneficial for the body. Therefore, it is considered safe for a healthy individual to consume fresh yogurt in moderation even during the monsoon season.
There may be a risk of food infection
However, due to the high humidity in the atmosphere during the rainy season, bacteria and fungus thrive. Therefore, consuming stale or long-storage yogurt can increase the risk of foodborne infections. Therefore, always consume fresh and properly stored yogurt. If the taste or smell of yogurt changes, avoid consuming it.
People suffering from cold and cough should be cautious
People who already have a cold, sore throat, severe cough, or sinus problems should exercise caution when eating yogurt. Although yogurt doesn’t directly cause a cold, cold foods can aggravate throat discomfort in some people. Therefore, avoiding yogurt at night and limiting it to daytime meals may be a better option.
Include it in your diet in a healthy way
If you want to eat yogurt during the monsoon season, you can incorporate it into your diet in even healthier ways. Adding roasted cumin, black salt, black pepper, or mint to yogurt enhances its flavor and can also aid digestion. Yogurt raita is also a good option, provided it uses fresh vegetables and is consumed immediately after preparation.
Those with weak immunity should take special care
People with weakened immune systems or frequent stomach infections should also pay special attention to hygiene. Fresh homemade yogurt is considered safer than yogurt or yogurt made from it.
Experts also recommend that a balanced diet, adequate water intake, and seasonal fruits and green vegetables during the monsoon season help maintain the body’s immune system. Simply eliminating certain foods altogether isn’t the solution; it’s more important to eat them in the right amounts and at the right times.
Overall, there’s nothing completely wrong with eating yogurt during the rainy season. If the yogurt is fresh, hygienically prepared, and your health is suitable, it’s safe to consume in moderation. However, if you have a serious throat problem, frequent infections, or a specific medical condition, it’s best to consult a doctor or nutritionist before including yogurt in your diet.
