Shimla: The Himachal Pradesh government has launched a special subsidy scheme to promote fisheries in the state. Under this scheme, the state government, headed by Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu, has launched a comprehensive subsidy scheme for fishing boats and fishing equipment for fishermen.
Government to provide Rs. 35,000 subsidy for boat purchase
Under this subsidy scheme in Himachal Pradesh, eligible reservoir fishermen will receive 70 percent financial assistance for boat purchases. Each boat costs Rs. 50,000, of which the state government will bear 70 percent, i.e. Rs. 35,000, and the remaining 30 percent, i.e. Rs. 15,000, will be borne by the beneficiary. The scheme aims to modernize the fishing fleets in major reservoirs such as Gobind Sagar, Pong Dam, Chamera, Ranjit Sagar, and Kol Dam, thereby improving safety, efficiency, and earning opportunities for fishermen.
What are the conditions for receiving the subsidy?
To qualify for the subsidy, applicants must be active members of a registered Primary Fisheries Cooperative Society and have engaged in fishing for at least 50 days in a financial year.
90 percent subsidy on cast nets and gill nets
In another significant initiative, the state government has launched a 90 percent subsidy on cast nets and gill nets. Under this scheme, river fishermen will be able to purchase cast nets worth ₹3,000 for just ₹300, with the state government providing a subsidy of ₹2,700.
For gill nets worth ₹5,000, fishermen will only have to pay ₹500.
Similarly, reservoir fishermen will be able to purchase gill nets worth ₹5,000 for just ₹500, with the state government providing a subsidy of ₹4,500. This initiative aims to make quality fishing gear affordable, promote sustainable fishing practices, and increase fish production in rivers and reservoirs across the state.
Fishermen must have a valid license issued by the Fisheries Department
Under this scheme, 4,000 active river fishermen will receive cast nets and 3,000 active reservoir fishermen will receive gill nets through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system. Eligible beneficiaries must have a valid fishing license issued by the Fisheries Department for at least three consecutive years.
