Marcus Rashford could be set for a reunion with former manager Ruben Amorim.

Michael Carrick has confirmed that Marcus Rashford will rejoin the Manchester United squad when they travel to the Republic of Ireland for the next stage of their pre-season preparations.

Rashford’s future at club level has looked uncertain this summer after Barcelona chose not to trigger their £26million option to make his move permanent following his season-long loan spell at Camp Nou last season.

The 28-year-old had earlier seemed to be nearing the end of his Manchester United career after being left out by former boss Ruben Amorim. He had also spent time on loan at Aston Villa and has not featured for his parent club in a competitive match since the Europa League clash with Viktoria Plzen in December 2024.

Rashford, who remains under contract at Old Trafford until the summer of 2028, was part of the England squad that finished third at this summer’s World Cup in North America. After that campaign, he was entitled to a compulsory three-week break.

That holiday is now drawing to a close, with Carrick confirming that Rashford will reconnect with United in the coming days as the team heads to Dublin for a training camp. The trip also includes a historic friendly against rivals Leeds at Croke Park in Dublin on Wednesday night.

Rashford will return alongside England team-mate Kobbie Mainoo and Argentina defender Lisandro Martinez, both of whom have also been away on holiday after their World Cup commitments.

“I've played with him. I played in the game he made his debut, so we have a history,” Carrick said when asked about Rashford after Saturday’s 1-1 friendly draw with Paris Saint-Germain in Gothenburg.

“We have got a full squad this week in Dublin. We fly straight there and have a few days where we have the whole group back together.

“Marcus is part of that, and Kobbie and Lisandro. We look forward to seeing them.”

Reports this week have claimed that Rashford, who is said to earn £325,000 per week, will receive an extra £4m this season if he remains at United because of a contract clause linked to their qualification for the Champions League. Another clause, which reportedly allowed any club except Manchester City or Liverpool to sign him for £40m, is said to have expired last month.

Carrick will also hope Mason Mount is available to face Leeds after the midfielder went off just 20 minutes into the match against PSG following a knock suffered in a heavy challenge.

The former Chelsea playmaker was seen leaving Ullevi Stadium on Saturday with no limp and no protective boot, walking normally, while his manager confirmed that the substitution had been only a precaution.

Veteran goalkeeper Tom Heaton had to be withdrawn immediately after half-time against PSG because of a hamstring injury. United were also still without the likes of Benjamin Sesko and Matthijs de Ligt in Sweden, along with long-term absentee Manuel Ugarte and the unwell Senne Lammens and Matheus Cunha.

However, new signing Youri Tielemans made an encouraging debut from the bench, while captain Bruno Fernandes, Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui all returned.

Following the camp in Ireland and the fixture against Leeds, United will complete pre-season next weekend against an AC Milan side managed by Amorim in Wroclaw, Poland. Their Premier League opener then comes away to newly-promoted Hull on August 22.
