Several opposition party workers from Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and Congress were detained by Jharsuguda Police after attempting to protest against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Dharmendra Pradhan during his travel to Veer Surendra Sai Airport, an official confirmed.
Pradhan faced criticism recently over the NEET-UG paper leak and resigned from his position as Union Education Minister following student protests at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar organised by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP).
The Jharsuguda Additional Superintendent of Police (SP), James Samad, stated that the protesters were taken into preventive custody on Sunday as a precautionary step to avoid security breaches and maintain law and order during Pradhan’s movement. The detained workers were brought to a local police station.
Meanwhile, a substantial number of BJP workers and supporters gathered at the airport to welcome Pradhan, resulting in increased political activity in the vicinity.
Security measures were intensified along the minister’s route and around the airport in anticipation of the planned protest. Additional SP Samad reported no untoward incidents, confirming the BJP MP entered the airport without obstruction.
“There was no problem at all. The former Union Education Minister entered the airport. The protesters were not allowed to enter the airport area,” Samad said.
Police maintained strict security cordons to ensure the minister’s smooth transit and to prevent any clashes between opposing political groups.
