Kyle Walker has sent out a defiant message before Burnley begin their Championship campaign, insisting he will not turn into a meme for ambitious young wingers. After a painful relegation from the Premier League last season, Walker is highly driven to help take the club back to the top flight. The experienced defender is still confident about his physical condition as he sets his sights on winning another trophy.

Returning to his Championship roots

After going down from the Premier League last season, Walker is getting ready for his first Championship season in 15 years. Speaking to the Daily Mail, Walker admitted that dropping out of the top division was hard to accept, but he believes he has a duty to help Burnley respond strongly.

Walker’s rise began during a loan spell at QPR in the 2010-11 season, an experience that helped lay the foundation for a trophy-filled career with Tottenham and Manchester City. Even after winning 17 major trophies, Walker is keen to conquer the second tier once more. He feels a strong sense of responsibility to deliver for both the supporters and his team-mates.

Taking on the meme culture

At 36, Walker is aware that emerging wingers in the Championship will see him as a target as they try to build their own reputation. Even so, he is fully determined to maintain his elite standards and stop any efforts to embarrass him on the pitch.

“I think they try to create, what are they called… memes now. They’ll try and create memes out of me, but I can assure you I am not becoming anyone’s meme,” Walker said. He accepted that the physical challenge of a 46-game season is demanding, but he believes his genetic gifts will help him continue performing at his best for Burnley.

Learning from Vincent Kompany

As part of his preparation for the relentless demands of the division, Walker turned to former Manchester City team-mate Vincent Kompany for advice. Kompany had previously guided Burnley to 101 points in the Championship.

“I’ve spoken to Vincent Kompany and got advice from him,” Walker explained. “I asked how he found it after achieving what he achieved. He said it’s difficult and something that is going to be a task for myself, but it is also very enjoyable because you become a big fish again, and you get a little bit more of the ball.”

What next for Burnley?

Burnley will open their Championship season next Sunday at home against West Ham, with Walker expected to take on a key leadership role. Under Nicky Hayen, the club are aiming for an immediate return to the Premier League. Walker sees promotion as another major trophy he is desperate to add to his outstanding resume.
