Aston Villa has confirmed the permanent transfer of defender Lucas Digne to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). Digne joined Aston Villa in January 2022 from Everton and made 182 appearances for the club, scoring four goals and providing 24 assists during his time at Villa Park.
The French defender was part of the Aston Villa team that won the UEFA Europa League last season and later represented France at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where they reached the semi-finals.
In a statement, Aston Villa described Digne as “a consummate professional, who was highly regarded by his fellow players and staff alike,” and extended “the very best wishes of everyone at the football club” as he departs.
Digne began his professional career in France and previously played for clubs including Barcelona and Everton before joining Aston Villa.
In May, PSG became only the second club to successfully defend the UEFA Champions League (UCL) title by defeating Arsenal 4-3 in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw following extra time in the final at the Puskas Arena in Budapest. Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhães missed the decisive penalty, allowing PSG to secure back-to-back Champions League victories.
PSG joined 15-time champions Real Madrid as the only clubs to retain the Champions League title since the competition’s rebranding in 1992. Real Madrid achieved this by winning three consecutive titles between 2016 and 2018. The final marked the first Champions League match to be decided by a penalty shootout since Real Madrid’s 2016 victory over Atletico Madrid. Overall, PSG became the 10th club in European Cup history, dating to 1955, to win consecutive continental titles.
