Chennai: Stress may play a role in worsening acne, particularly during periods of anxiety, examinations, work pressure or emotional difficulties. However, dermatologists caution that stress alone is rarely the only cause of acne.

Acne vulgaris is one of the world’s most common skin conditions, affecting about 9.4% of the global population. It is particularly common among adolescents and young adults, with prevalence estimates reaching 85% to 90% in some younger age groups.

How stress can affect the skin

Psychological stress can influence the body through hormonal and inflammatory pathways, potentially aggravating existing acne. Stress can also indirectly affect skin health by disrupting sleep, changing eating habits and making it harder for people to follow regular skincare or prescribed treatment routines.

These factors can combine to make breakouts more noticeable or persistent during stressful periods.

However, the relationship between stress and acne is complex. Acne can also be associated with hormonal disorders, metabolic abnormalities, medications and other underlying factors.

Stress management can support treatment

Dermatologists therefore advise against assuming that every acne flare-up is caused by stress. Persistent or severe acne should be assessed to identify possible underlying causes and determine appropriate treatment.

Managing psychological stress can nevertheless be a useful part of overall skin care. Maintaining adequate sleep, following a balanced routine and staying consistent with recommended acne treatment may help support skin health.

The key message is that stress management should complement, rather than replace, medical acne treatment. Understanding the connection between mental wellbeing and skin health may help people manage breakouts more effectively while avoiding unnecessary self-treatment.
