Surat: An inquiry committee formed following the death of 29-year-old resident doctor Harsh Pandya at the New Civil Hospital PG hostel has confirmed serious allegations of ragging. Resident doctor found dead in hostel room

The death of 29-year-old resident doctor Harsh Pandya occurred at the PG Boys’ Hostel on the campus of Surat’s New Civil Hospital. He was a first-year postgraduate student in the Department of Microbiology and also worked as a resident doctor at the hospital.

According to the report, after he failed to report for duty on Saturday, hospital staff attempted to contact him. When his mobile phone was switched off, another resident doctor was sent to his hostel room. The door was locked from the inside. After considerable effort, when the door was opened, Harsh’s body was found inside. The hospital administration and police were then informed.

Inquiry committee probes allegations of ragging

Following the incident, a committee was formed to investigate the matter at the direction of Gujarat Health Minister Praful Pansaria. The main focus of the investigation was to determine whether the deceased doctor had faced ragging, mental harassment, or any other form of pressure from senior doctors.

The anti-ragging team questioned senior doctors, faculty, and other staff members associated with the Department of Microbiology. Based on the allegations that surfaced during the investigation, action was taken against four senior resident doctors. According to reports, the investigation revealed allegations of mental harassment, alleged verbal abuse, and inappropriate behavior.

Four senior doctors suspended for six months

Following the committee’s report, four resident doctors have been suspended for six months. They have been instructed to vacate the hostel and refrain from academic activities during this period.

In addition, show-cause notices have been issued to four other doctors associated with the Microbiology Department, asking them to explain their role and responsibility in the matter. Further action will be determined based on their responses and the investigation’s findings.

The family mentioned problems to senior doctors

The deceased doctor’s family has also cited issues with senior doctors. According to reports, Harsh’s father is also a surgeon and he was the family’s only son. He had been engaged about six months ago.

The family had questioned the circumstances of the death and requested a forensic autopsy. The investigation determined the cause of death to be hanging. However, further investigation will be crucial to determine the connection between the ragging and alleged mental harassment and the death.

The case has also raised serious questions about the treatment of resident doctors and the monitoring of ragging in medical colleges and hospitals. The administration is now taking further action based on the findings of the investigation.
