Moong Dal Laddu: If you’re craving something sweet and want to avoid sweets made with sugar or jaggery, green moong dal laddus can be a great alternative. These laddus, made from moong dal, are rich in protein and fiber and can be easily made at home.
The special thing is that they don’t require many ingredients, and you can also add dry fruits of your choice. Adding ghee and dried fruits can increase their calorie content.
Ingredients for Making Moong Dal Laddoo
1 cup green moong dal
2-3 tablespoons ghee
2 tablespoons chopped almonds
1 tablespoon chopped cashews
1 tablespoon pistachios
1/2 teaspoon cardamom powder
1-2 tablespoons desiccated coconut (optional)
Sugar-free sweetener of choice (optional)
Ingredients for Making Moong Dal Laddoo
How to Prepare Moong Dal Laddoo
Step 1: Roast the Moong Dal
First, clean the green moong dal and add it to a pan. Roast it over low heat with little or no ghee. Stir constantly to prevent burning. When the dal begins to emit a mild aroma and changes color slightly, turn off the heat.
Step 2: Grind the dal
Let the roasted moong dal cool completely. Then, put it in a mixer and grind it into a fine paste. Make sure the dal powder is not too coarse.
Step 3: Prepare the Dry Fruits
Heat some ghee in a pan and lightly fry the chopped almonds, cashews, and pistachios. Do not over-fry them, otherwise the dry fruits may taste bitter.

Step 4: Mix all the ingredients
Now add the ground moong dal to the same pan. Add the remaining ghee, roasted dry fruits, cardamom powder, and coconut shavings. Mix everything well over low heat. If you prefer a sweeter taste, you can add the appropriate sweetener as per your requirement.
Step 5: Prepare the Laddoo Mixture
When the mixture is well combined and slightly bindable, turn off the heat. Let it cool for a while. Be sure the mixture does not cool completely, otherwise it may be difficult to bind the laddus.
Step 6: Form the Laddoo
Lightly apply ghee to your hands. Now take a small portion of the prepared mixture in your palm and press it into a round shape. Prepare all the laddus in the same manner.
Let them set at room temperature for a while. After this, they can be stored in an airtight container.
Are sugar-free laddus really healthy?
Not using sugar or jaggery may reduce the sugar content in these laddus, but that doesn’t mean they are calorie-free. Ghee and dried fruits are also used along with mung dal, which can increase calories.
If you get bored of eating the same dal or mung bean dish every day, this recipe can help you incorporate mung dal into your diet in a different way.
