Los Angeles: Hollywood actor and former US Congressman Ben Jones has died at the age of 84. Jones was best known for his role on the popular CBS action series “The Dukes of Hazzard.” He later entered politics and served as a member of the US House of Representatives.
Ben Jones’s wife, Alma Viator, announced his death in a Facebook post. She stated that Ben Jones died of a heart attack at home while preparing to watch a baseball game on television.
Alma wrote that Ben was the love of her life and had a wonderful life. She added that Ben was loved by many and will be missed.
Ben Jones gained popularity as Cooter Devane on the series “The Dukes of Hazzard.” The show ran for seven seasons, airing from January 1979 to February 1985. He appeared in 141 episodes.
Following the show’s popularity, Ben Jones entered politics. He ran for Congress in 1986 as a Democratic Party candidate, but lost in a close contest. Two years later, he won re-election and secured a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.
In 1994, he lost the election to Newt Gingrich. An ethics complaint filed against him later contributed to Gingrich’s resignation as House Speaker in 1998.
