Team India Head Coach: Veteran Indian batsman VVS Laxman has made a major revelation. Laxman revealed that he was supposed to become Team India’s head coach in 2023. The BCCI had offered him the position three years ago, but Laxman declined. Laxman explained that due to personal reasons, he declined the head coach position and decided to continue as the head of the CoE. Consequently, the BCCI extended the tenure of then-head coach Rahul Dravid, after which he took charge of the team until the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Laxman had talked to Jai Shah

VVS Laxman spoke to the media at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru on Sunday. He revealed that he was expected to become head coach after the 2023 ODI World Cup. However, he declined the responsibility due to personal reasons. Laxman stated that he met with Jay Shah twice regarding the matter and explained his situation. Consequently, Gautam Gambhir was appointed Team India’s new head coach after Rahul Dravid’s tenure ended.

Does Laxman want to become the chief selector?

Recently, some media reports claimed that the BCCI is considering replacing Ajit Agarkar with VVS Laxman as the new chief selector. However, Laxman has clarified that he will not be joining the national team’s head coach or selection committee for now. Therefore, it is believed that Ajit Agarkar will continue as chief selector until the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Laxman’s tenure extended by 2 years

During the press conference, VVS Laxman announced that he has decided to extend his tenure at the Centre of Excellence for two years. He said that former BCCI Secretary Jay Shah gave him complete freedom to pursue his vision. The current Secretary, Devajit Saikia, is also fully supporting him.

For this reason, he has extended his tenure at the CoE for two years. He says he will spend the next two years working to strengthen the CoE’s system. He wants to fully establish the CoE’s structure, processes, and standard operating procedures for its various departments.
