Newcastle United have reportedly made an approach for Fikayo Tomori after Ruben Amorim decided against keeping faith with the England international.

Newcastle United could look to add some experience to their defence through Tomori after their summer departures.

That is according to fresh reports, with the Toon aiming to reshape the squad after losing players such as Kieran Trippier, Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and, most recently, Bruno Guimaraes in the transfer market.

With new Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle focusing on bringing in younger prospects who can grow with the club, there has been a significant loss of experience on Tyneside, and Tomori is seen as one possible option to bring some of that back.

Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport has reported that Tomori was omitted from Milan’s recent friendly against Chelsea because new manager Ruben Amorim does not see the Canada-born defender as part of his plans.

Quotidiano Sportivo has now added that Newcastle are “knocking” for his signature, with Coventry City also in the picture.

Although Amorim’s decision not to keep Tomori may raise some eyebrows, especially as the Portuguese coach is well known for preferring a back three, the 28-year-old has not been at his best over the past year and has at times found it difficult to operate in a high defensive line.

A return to the Premier League could still help revive the career of the former Scudetto winner, though, particularly as a squad option who brings considerable experience.

Newcastle are still feeling the impact of losing captain Guimaraes, with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg reportedly being considered to fill the leadership gap in central midfield.

Tomori, meanwhile, could be used either in central defence or at full-back because of ongoing doubts over his positional awareness. It is also an area Newcastle are still trying to strengthen after Trippier left on a free transfer for Wolverhampton Wanderers at the end of the season, while uncertainty remains over Lewis Hall’s future.

In any case, Milan may find it difficult to demand a major fee for the England defender. Tomori’s current contract has only one year left to run, and the Rossoneri are in no hurry to extend it.

After making his senior England debut in 2019 — having previously represented the Three Lions at under-19, under-20 and under-21 level following a switch in allegiance from Canada’s under-20 side — Tomori has gone on to win only six senior international caps.

The most recent of those came under Thomas Tuchel, with the Milan defender named in the starting XI against Uruguay in a friendly in March, where he began the match at left-back.

According to Transfermarkt, Tomori is valued at €17m. Newcastle begin the Premier League season with an opening-day meeting against Liverpool.
