Rain to Lash Odisha Till August 17: Check Day-Wise IMD Warning

Odisha is set for another spell of widespread monsoon activity, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds across the state from August 11 to August 17, 2026. The weather is expected to intensify from August 13, with Orange warnings issued for several districts for heavy to very heavy rainfall.

The IMD has attributed the developing weather system to an upper-air cyclonic circulation over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas. A low-pressure area is likely to form over the same region around August 12, which could strengthen rainfall activity over Odisha.

August 11: Yellow Warning

On August 11, a Yellow warning has been issued for heavy rainfall at isolated places in 21 districts, including Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Subarnapur, Boudh, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khordha and Nayagarh.

Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 30–40 kmph are also possible in several districts.

August 12: Rain Across Most Parts of the State

The Yellow warning continues on August 12, with heavy rain possible at isolated places in 22 districts.

Several coastal and western districts, including Balasore, Bhadrak, Cuttack, Puri, Ganjam, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh and Sambalpur, are among the areas under warning.

Thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds of 30–40 kmph are expected at isolated locations across all of Odisha.

August 13: Rain Intensifies

The situation is expected to become more serious from August 13.

An Orange warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall has been issued for Cuttack, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Angul and Dhenkanal.

Another 18 districts are under Yellow warning for heavy rain. Thunderstorms and gusty winds are also expected across the state.

August 14: Orange Alert Continues

On August 14, Jharsuguda, Bargarh and Sambalpur will remain under an Orange warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall.

A Yellow warning has been issued for several other districts, including Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Sundargarh, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Nuapada and Balangir.

Lightning and gusty winds are also likely across Odisha.

August 15: Western Odisha Under Alert

Four districts—Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh and Sambalpur—have been placed under an Orange warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall.

Heavy rain is also possible in Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Subarnapur, Boudh and Balangir under a Yellow warning.

Coastal and southern districts may also experience thunderstorms, lightning and winds reaching 30–40 kmph.

August 16: Rainfall Begins to Ease

The intensity of rainfall is expected to gradually decrease on August 16.

However, Sambalpur remains under an Orange warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall. A Yellow warning has also been issued for Sundargarh, Angul, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Subarnapur and Boudh.

August 17: Rain Activity Expected to Subside

By August 17, rainfall activity is expected to weaken.

A Yellow warning for heavy rain remains in place for Balasore, Bhadrak, Jagatsinghpur, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj.

Low-Pressure System Behind the Rain Spell

According to the IMD forecast, the upper-air cyclonic circulation over the northwest Bay of Bengal and neighbouring areas is persisting and extends up to around 7.6 km above mean sea level. A low-pressure area is likely to develop around August 12 under its influence.

This system is expected to play a major role in maintaining widespread rainfall over Odisha during the week.

People Advised to Stay Alert

With thunderstorms, lightning, gusty winds and heavy rainfall expected, residents in affected districts should remain cautious. The IMD has advised people to avoid open areas during thunderstorms and regularly monitor official weather updates.

Residents in low-lying areas should also remain alert for temporary waterlogging and other rain- disruptions.
