Digital Desk, New Delhi. A new controversy erupted at Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on Monday. During an event, the JNU Students’ Union (JNUSU) demanded the release of Umar Khalid. Slogans such as “Release Umar Khalid” and “The jail locks will be broken, all comrades will be released” were heard outside the SSS-2 building.

A discussion event was held on the university campus today on Umar Khalid’s book “Fractured Communities.” The book has sparked a new controversy, with JNU Students’ Union leaders raising slogans like “Release Umar Khalid!” In response, ABVP supporters protesting the event chanted “Khalid is a Pakistani.”

Last minute booking cancellation

This event was organized by JNUSU to discuss Umar Khalid’s book. The union claims that the JNU administration canceled the auditorium booking at the last minute. Despite this, the union decided to hold the event and later held it outside the SSS-2 building. Meanwhile, ABVP supporters arrived at the venue and began shouting slogans against the event. Tensions arose at the scene due to the sloganeering from both sides.

Serious allegations against JNU administration

Following this incident, the student union accused the JNU administration of canceling permission for the event at the last minute. They called the administration a “Sanghi administration,” claiming that an attempt was made to restrict the culture of debate, discussion, and dissent at the university. The union further claimed that despite being denied permission, hundreds of students participated in the event, sending a message that they were committed to preserving the university’s democratic environment. Meanwhile, the ABVP was accused of disrupting the event.
