What was Tuntun's real name?
Let us tell you that Tun Tun's real name was Uma Devi Khatri. He was born on 11 July 1923 in a small village in Amroha district of Uttar Pradesh.
Family massacred over land dispute
Tun Tun's life started with a very horrifying accident. When Uma Devi was just two and a half to three years old, her parents and brother were brutally murdered over a minor land dispute. After this, her uncle brought her up but he considered Uma a burden. All the work in the house and fields was done by them. Despite this, he did not even get enough food. But amidst this darkness Uma had only one support, that was her voice. He was very fond of singing.
Passion for singing took her to Mumbai
Tun Tun used to hum along by listening to songs on the radio without any training. Fed up with the oppression of the village and to fulfill her dream of becoming a singer, Uma Devi ran away from home at the age of just 13 and reached Mumbai. A family gave him shelter in Mumbai. With the help of his magical voice, he knocked on the door of famous musician Naushad Saheb in the year 1946. He directly said in front of Naushad Sahab, 'Give me a chance to sing. Otherwise I will commit suicide by jumping into the sea. Naushad Sahab was so impressed by her outspokenness and voice that he gave Uma Devi her first break in the film 'Vamika Zara'. 'Afsana Likh Rahi Hoon Dil Bekarar Ka', a song from the 1946 film Dard. This song had made people intoxicated. After this Uma Devi became a star overnight.
Earned name in the world of comedy
When singers like Asha Bhosle came into the singing world, the shine of Tun Tun started fading. Then Naushad Sahab gave him an advice. He said, Uma, your body is heavy and your comic timing is amazing. Why don't you try your hand at acting? After this, Naushad Sahab got him a comic role in Dilip Kumar's film 'Babul'. After this film, Dilip Kumar lovingly named him Tun Tun, which later became his screen name. After this Tun Tun never looked back. From the 1950s to the 1980s, it became a necessity for every other Bollywood film. He worked with big superstars like Guru Dutt, Amitabh Bachchan, Dilip Kumar. He acted in more than 200 films in a career spanning nearly five decades. Died on 24 November 2003 at the age of 80.
