A very wonderful and relief news has come to the fore for the farmers of Chatra district of Jharkhand. Now you do not need to worry about paying huge premium for crop protection. Under the government's 'Birsa Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana' (Kharif 2026-27), farmers can now get their crops insured at a nominal premium of just Re 1. This simply means that if your crop gets ruined due to an act of nature (natural disaster or bad weather), the government will give you the cover of financial security.

The insured amount is fixed according to the crop.

The sum insured for Kharif season in Chatra district has also been decided in advance. If you cultivate non-fired paddy, you can get the benefit of sum assured up to Rs 63,558 per hectare. Whereas for Bhadai corn this amount is fixed at Rs 48,513 per hectare. Remember that this sum insured is a security cover, and the claim amount will be decided based on the assessment of your crop loss.

Under what circumstances will the money be given?

This insurance scheme is not limited to drought only, but it covers many disasters. Whether sowing is not possible due to less rainfall, or the standing crop after sowing gets damaged due to hailstorm, cyclone or excessive rain, farmers can claim in every situation. Not only this, even if the crop is kept in the field for drying after harvesting and there is damage due to unseasonal rain or cyclone for the next 14 days, the farmer will still be eligible for the insurance claim. Apart from this, if the yield after harvesting is much less than expected, there is a provision to get compensation as per the rules of the scheme.

Who can get insurance and how?

Both farmers who have taken loan from the bank (borrowers) and those who have not taken loan (non-borrowers) can avail the benefit of this scheme. Loanee farmers will complete this process through their bank, but farmers who are not connected to the bank can register themselves at the nearest Pragya Kendra, bank branch, cooperative society or directly through the 'Crop Insurance App' and portal.

To get insurance, you will have to carry your Aadhar card, bank passbook, land documents and documents to crop sowing. The administration has clearly said that instead of giving money to any middleman or unauthorized person, take the help of authorized centers only.

Special awareness campaign will run till 31st August

Chatra administration has started a special publicity campaign from August 10 to August 31, 2026 to connect farmers with this scheme. During this period, publicity chariots are being sent to villages and panchayats so that no eligible farmer misses this opportunity. Farming is completely dependent on the weather, in such a situation an investment of Rs 1 can save your years of hard work from getting wasted.
