Bogota. The devastating earthquake of 7.4 magnitude that occurred in Colombia on Monday, August 10, has caused huge devastation. Many scary videos just before and during the earthquake are going viral on social media, in which multi-storey buildings are seen falling like cards. Terrified people are seen running on the streets to save their lives due to the fear of this disaster. Seeing the seriousness of the situation, the newly elected President 'Abelardo de la Espriella' has declared a national emergency in the country.

Cities turned into debris, more than 500 injured

According to reports, the earthquake has caused huge damage to life and property in many parts of Colombia. According to preliminary data from disaster management officials, 132 people have been confirmed dead, while this figure is expected to increase further due to being buried under the debris. Apart from this, more than 570 people are seriously injured, who are undergoing treatment in hospitals. More than 1,575 houses, 18 health centers and 52 schools have been completely or partially damaged.

Choco region was the main center

According to the Colombian Geological Service, the epicenter of this powerful earthquake was near San José del Palmar, located in the Chocó region of the Western Department. Also, its strong tremors were felt in the neighboring countries Venezuela, Ecuador and Panama. The cities of Pereira, Cali, and Manicales within Colombia were most affected by the disaster. A large part of the Université Libre building in the city of Pereira collapsed, while the tower of a historic cathedral in Manicales collapsed.

Relief and rescue operations continue on war footing

Let us tell you that after the declaration of national emergency here, teams of army, police and civil defense are conducting rescue operations in the affected areas. The help of search dogs and modern equipment is being taken to search for living people buried under the debris. Meanwhile, the international community has also extended a helping hand to Colombia. The US government has offered to send all possible assistance and technical help to Colombia in this time of crisis. The administration has appealed to the citizens not to panic and stay in safe places due to the fear of aftershocks.
