China created unbreakable crystal: In their desire to surpass the laws of nature, Chinese scientists have prepared an unbreakable crystal. Chinese scientists have prepared such a crystal which cannot be broken even by a strong blow of a hammer. It is being seen as a replacement for diamond. Chinese scientists from the Institute of Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Beihang University have created a strong new diamond composite that does not break even when hit by a heavy hammer. By incorporating carbon nanotubes as an internal support structure, they increased the diamond's strength sixfold, while maintaining its extreme hardness.

In lab tests, the hardness of this new material was measured at about 91.6 GPa, which is that of a normal diamond. Its toughness reached about 36.4 MPa·m¹/². According to scientists, this is about five to six times improvement compared to normal diamond. That is, in simple language, scientists have tried to reduce diamond's biggest weakness to a great extent while maintaining its biggest quality i.e. its hardness.
It can be used in extremely strong cutting and polishing tools, machining of metals and ceramics, geological drill bits and even aerospace components.
To strengthen this new diamond, scientists used multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). These are extremely thin but strong carbon fiber like structures. Their thickness can be equal to about 10 thousandth of the width of a human hair, while they are many times stronger than steel.
Scientists mixed these carbon nanotubes with very fine diamond powder. After this, this mixture was kept at a temperature of about 2000 degrees Celsius and 15 gigapascal pressure. This pressure is about 1.5 lakh times more than normal atmospheric pressure.

During this process, the nanotubes maintained their fiber-like structure and formed extremely strong chemical bonds with the diamond.
