Delhi: Pakistan's ODI captain Shaheen Afridi has given a big statement regarding his captaincy. When he was asked whether he would remain the captain of Pakistan till the 2027 ODI World Cup, he said that as of now, I am the captain.
Afridi gave this statement in the press conference of the National Champions Cup. Questions are being raised about his captaincy because there are reports that former Pakistan captain Babar Azam may be given a bigger responsibility again. However, Pakistan Cricket Board has not made any official announcement in this regard.
Focus on preparing for the World Cup
Instead of giving too much importance to the question of captaincy, Afridi emphasized on preparation for the 2027 World Cup. He said that the National Champions Cup will help Pakistan in preparing a strong pool of players for the World Cup.
He said that due to injuries during the World Cup, the team often faces shortage of players. In such a situation, backup players can be prepared from domestic tournaments.
According to Afridi, along with the performance of the players in the tournament, their fitness will also be monitored. This performance can play an important role in selecting the World Cup team.
Became captain in October 2025
Shaheen Afridi was made the ODI captain of Pakistan in October 2025. He had taken this responsibility in place of Mohammad Rizwan. Now amid the discussion about Babar Azam being given the captaincy again, Afridi has made it clear that at present he is the ODI captain of Pakistan. His eyes are now on the upcoming matches and preparations for the 2027 World Cup.
